Remember these 3 key points to crack your programming interview in the first shot

If you are someone who is going to appear for an Interview for a programming job, there are certain things you can take notes of and keep them as a personal guide to crack the interview. There are certain mistakes which programmers tends to make while appearing for an interview even after a depth knowledge in writing a code.

  1. Sell yourself with knowledge but in a good box.

    What I mean here is, most programmers tends to forget that it is a great up if you are sound with writing codes but do not forget, able to write codes is important but it is not the only thing, yes, a company’s hiring manager is looking for more than just people who can write codes. They are basically looking for candidates with better presentation skills as well. Trust me, I have seen people with vast knowledge getting slammed out of the interviewers room because of their poor presentation which usually comprises of communication, confidence, walking, attire and management skills. Though don’t misinterpret it in a way that, you can get away if you can’t write code. Simply if a programmer can’t code, they are of no use to the company looking for programmers but if given a choice between two candidates with good programming skills but different presentation skills, a company will definitely opt for the person with higher presentation skills. So, if you’re a programmer, preparing for an interview, try to work on your soft skills so that you can be extremely comfortable enough to cakewalk your first interview with some awesome showcase of your coding skills as well.
  2. Stuck with a coding problem? Stop panicking and start acting.

    This happens with a lot of students as well, when an interviewer’s question is not able to be answered by a student, he either starts thinking, takes a pretty long break with a hell lot of conversation delay. It’s a complete no to do this because even if you are not able to answer the question or write a particular code then you should not stay quiet for long as this shows that you are extremely under confident and if given a task, being in the company, you might fail to deliver it. Instead what you can do is, you can start a conversation to the interviewer related to that particular problem and can explain him the procedure at least to gain some trust. Also, incase you carry zero idea about what interviewer is asking, you should not take much time, and start deviating the question with the stuff you know because the next question, now, you will be getting will most probably will be from the topic you started which supposingly you are comfortable to answer as well. So, you have a little bit focused, aware and smart while appearing for your interviews.
  3. Good Code explaining your approach

    Now, coming to the programming part of the interview. Usually the interviewer shortlist candidates who are able to write good & short code for a particular problem and also are comfortable with the approach used while writing it. It’s a natural habit within some junior programmers to mug up code snippets, this could land you in some trouble in case your interviewer tweak the problem even a little. It’s always better to know the bits of information while writing a particular code because right after you write the paper on code, most interviewers tends to know the mental ability to solve a problem.
